I am aware im going to write about a very sensitive topic here and I would like to clarify that this is nothing more or less than my PERSONAL VIEW on this specific issue.
Even though this article is about a social issue, the religion is as much a part of it so I may mention religious stuff here and there just for clarity. Its not referred as "exorcism" in all the religions, but I use the common term for simplicity.
Exorcism exists, one or the other form in all main religions of the world. Possession is the cause. Exorcism the cure. Some say they get cured after exorcism. May be. May be not.
In Maldives, the society is much civilized and literate. Everyone can read, write and access mediums of information anytime they want. People are civilized. They know about medical conditions. They have access. Therefore to the naked eye, the spiritual way of healing doesn't exist any more. It actually does.
Almost every one in Maldives has a first hand experience on possession and even exorcism. Woo-doos also have pretty much the same kinda consequences so im not gonna talk about it in specific. If your a Maldivian and reading this, just take a moment to remember that brother or friend or neighbor of yours having to go through all sorts of traumas due to some evil powers upon them. Or may be you would have heard how that certain somebody was cured after an exorcism!?
Does it work? What is possession? What is exorcism? Can you blame another person for your own mishaps? Its a very human approach to find someone to blame but its also very wrong.
In most cases possession includes having horrible nightmares, feeling of being watched, some mishaps and in extreme cases the jinni (Demon) gets into the body of the person. Before going to my reasoning, I would like to mention Im a spiritual person. I believe in God Almighty, Jinni ( some of who obey god and some of who doesn't ) and I believe Jinnis can interact with humans. But I also believe the yhave their own lives. Their own things to do. We all have our own purpose of life. And some how along the way, you might experience or encounter jinnis since they are among us. But how often does that happen? In Islam it is said that they will not just come and "play" with humans for fun. When we accidentally do something to disturb them, they might cause some troubles to us. And Islam teaches how to protect yourself from the evils of such worlds. So what are the chances that we might encounter jinnis and get possessed? I dunno. But I do know it cant possibly be as high as it seems.
A person suffers a bad condition of headaches for more than a month or say a week, he seeks medical treatment and if he doesnt get cured, he is convinced its possession. That some jinni is overpowering him. Some one doesnt find any good luck or peace in the home, its always some jealous person doing a woo-doo on him. Or even when some people have marriage problems, they resolve it to be a woo-doo.
Can it happen so often? I dont believe. Because most of these people who claim to be possessed by jinnis hasnt seen anything as such in real life. Its always dreams and feelings.
Cant people be a little more practical? Cant you possibly have a medical condition? Psychological condition? And above them all, cant you accept the bad things in life as much as the good? Cant you take responsibility for your own bad things just like you take credit for the good things? Or do you simply want to blame it on someone else? Does that make you feel better to think your life is messed up because of some unseen power of evil? Or should it be better to find solutions within your reach of materialism rather than going beyond imagination towards spiritualism?
You decide.

Note; This is the third time I have written this article for this blog. Every time I write it, I have just too much to write, I delete it half way through. But this time I just couldn't hold it. Forgive me if I been too harsh.

Exactly my point jack! You and your life are nothing more than a product of your belief.

i have seen so many people with what is stated as mental health problems ...they see places and hear voices ...i sometimes wonder if with some we should be exploring what they hear and to define if it is just another aspect of things we don't understand....who knows...i tend to keep an open mind and remain agnostic..

Being open-minded is the key of course! Nobody is right or wrong regarding things we don't know. However, Trying to be open and trying to accept things beyond our reach, people are often carried away from the things that ARE within their reach. They get "TRAPPED" in closed worlds.
